The West Valley Outdoor Learning Center is a teaching and learning facility for students and their teachers in grades Pre K-College. Our site includes several teaching stations that afford students an opportunity to learn about the varied ecosystems of Eastern Washington. Students spend their time learning about topics such as plants, wildlife, geology, water ecology, and conservation just to name a few! Our campus features two classroom buildings with many things to see and interact with, live animal displays, several ponds and streams, and many native plant species. We also have a raptor sanctuary with nine education birds including a bald eagle named Hook.
While visiting the WVOLC students engage in inquiry-based learning while applying math, reading, writing and critical thinking skills as they investigate their natural world. All of our programs and curriculum are aligned with the Washington Sate Essential Academic Learning Requirements. Curriculum materials and training for teachers are available including Projects W.E.T., WILD, Project Flying WILD, and Project Learning Tree. Support from partnerships with the Spokane Aquifer Joint Board, Americorps, The CASA Foundation, The Inland Northwest Wildlife Council and the Bighorn Foundation helps the WVOLC provide programs to over 5000 community members each year. |
